Vaccines for Adults: What You Need and When
When we think of vaccines, we often associate them with childhood — but staying up to date on vaccinations is just as important for adults. Whether you're in your 20s, 40s, or beyond, certain vaccines are essential for protecting your health and the health of those around you. Here at ADAPS Healthcare in Norwood, MA, we are here to help you understand what you need, when you need it, and why adult vaccinations are a critical part of long-term wellness.
Why Adult Vaccines Matter
Immunity can fade over time, and new risks can emerge as we age or face certain health conditions. Vaccines not only reduce your risk of serious illness, but they also help prevent the spread of disease within your community — especially to vulnerable individuals like infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
important Vaccines for Adults
Here are the most commonly recommended vaccines for adults, based on age and health status:
Flu (Influenza) Vaccine – Every Year
Recommended annually for everyone over 6 months old.
Especially important for adults over 65, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions.
Tdap/Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
One dose of Tdap is recommended for all adults who haven't had it.
Then a Td booster every 10 years.
Important for protecting against whooping cough, especially if you’re around infants.
COVID-19 Vaccine & Boosters
Adults should stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations per CDC guidelines.
Boosters may vary by age, health condition, and latest recommendations.
Shingles (Herpes Zoster) – Age 50+
The Shingrix vaccine is recommended for adults over 50, even if you've had shingles before.
Given in two doses, 2 to 6 months apart.
Pneumococcal Vaccines – Age 65+ (or earlier for some conditions)
Helps protect against pneumonia and other pneumococcal infections.
There are two types (PCV15 and PPSV23) — your provider can advise which is right for you.
HPV (Human Papillomavirus) – Up to Age 45
If not previously vaccinated, adults up to age 45 may still benefit.
Helps protect against several cancers caused by HPV.
Hepatitis A & B
Recommended for adults with certain risk factors or chronic conditions.
Often given to healthcare workers, travelers, and those with liver disease or diabetes.
8. MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
Adults born after 1957 should ensure they’ve had at least one dose.
Those in healthcare or at higher exposure risk may need two doses.
