Same-day primary care or urgent care: what’s best for today’s health problem?
When you wake up with a sore throat, twist an ankle on a morning run, or notice burning when you pee, the first question is often where to go today. In Norwood and the Greater Boston area, you have choices. The right setting can save time, reduce costs, and keep your care connected to your health history.
At ADAPS Healthcare, we are a nurse practitioner-led primary care practice with same-day access for most acute issues. We also coordinate urgent concerns and guide you when an emergency department visit is the safest choice. This guide lays out what to do for common symptoms, what a same-day visit looks like here, and how to book quickly.
Primary care vs urgent care vs ER at a glance
Think of primary care as your first call for most problems. We know your history, medications, and chronic conditions, which helps us treat today’s issue in context. Urgent care is a good backup for problems that cannot wait but do not rise to an emergency. The emergency department is for life-threatening symptoms.
Same-day primary care at ADAPS: Sore throat, cough, flu-like illness, suspected UTI, ear pain, rash, minor sprains and strains, mild asthma flare, medication refills when appropriate, and follow-up after urgent or ER visits.
Urgent care: Lacerations needing stitches, simple fractures or dislocations that need quick imaging and splinting, severe but non-life-threatening pain when primary care access is unavailable.
Emergency room: Chest pain, trouble breathing, severe allergic reaction, signs of stroke, high fever with confusion, heavy bleeding, major trauma, or loss of consciousness. If in doubt about a possibly life-threatening symptom, call 911.
Real-world examples to guide your choice
Sore throat: Start with same-day primary care. We assess for strep, mono risk, hydration status, and exposure history. If you are unable to swallow, drooling, or struggling to breathe, go to the ER.
UTI symptoms: Same-day primary care can evaluate burning, urgency, and frequency, perform a urine test, and prescribe treatment. Back or side pain with fever may signal a kidney infection that needs urgent or ER-level evaluation.
Ankle sprain: We examine swelling, range of motion, and check Ottawa rules for imaging need. Most sprains are managed in primary care with rest, compression, elevation, and a recovery plan. Obvious deformity or an inability to bear any weight may require urgent care or ER for imaging and stabilization.
Chest pain: Do not go to urgent care. Call 911 or go to the ER. Chest pain is an emergency until proven otherwise.
Cost considerations, without the guesswork
Costs vary by insurance and services performed. In general, primary care visits often have lower co-pays and lower total costs than urgent care and significantly less than an ER visit. Because we have your history and records, we can usually avoid duplicate testing and unnecessary imaging. If we believe a facility with on-site imaging or procedures is the right next step, we will coordinate that to reduce delays and surprises.
If you have a high-deductible plan, ask about estimated charges before testing. You can review bills and make payments through the Patient Portal once your visit is processed.
What a same-day primary care visit at ADAPS looks like
You will be greeted and checked in, then a clinician reviews your symptoms and brief history. We examine the problem, order point-of-care tests as needed, and talk through treatment options and home care. If labs, imaging, or specialist input are warranted, we coordinate referrals and follow-up.
Your visit is with providers who know your chart. That means today’s sore throat is managed with your allergies, medications, and past strep results in mind. If you have diabetes, asthma, or thyroid disease, we consider how today’s illness interacts with those conditions, and we adjust your plan safely.
Our hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 7 pm. On weekends, we offer limited IV and injection services by appointment.
The benefits of continuity of care
Seeing your primary care team first keeps your story intact. We document today’s findings in your record, track patterns over time, and follow up. That continuity helps prevent medication interactions, flags recurring infections, and keeps chronic issues like blood pressure or A1C on track. If you do visit urgent care or the ER, bring us the discharge summary. We will integrate those details into your plan and schedule appropriate follow-up.

Routine care, annual exams, and wellness visits
A routine checkup in primary care typically includes a focused review of your medical history, medications, allergies, vitals, and a head-to-toe exam tailored to age and risk. We screen for depression and anxiety when appropriate, update vaccines, and order labs such as cholesterol or an A1C when clinically indicated. We also review lifestyle factors like sleep, nutrition, movement, and stress.
An annual exam is a preventive visit focused on staying healthy rather than treating a specific complaint. It emphasizes screening, risk assessment, immunizations, and counseling. A wellness exam is often used interchangeably with an annual exam. Depending on your insurance plan’s terminology, both center on prevention and long-term health goals. If you come in with an acute issue during a preventive visit, part of the visit may be billed as problem-focused care. We will explain what that means before proceeding.
Quick checklist for where to go today
Mild to moderate symptoms that started recently and are not life-threatening, such as sore throat, cough, ear pain, simple sprain, or suspected UTI: same-day primary care.
Cuts that may need stitches or injuries likely to need urgent imaging and splinting and you cannot reach primary care promptly: urgent care.
Chest pain, severe shortness of breath, stroke signs, heavy bleeding, sudden weakness or confusion, or major trauma: call 911 or go to the ER.
FAQ
Is it cheaper to see a primary care doctor or urgent care? In many cases, a primary care visit has a lower co-pay and lower total cost than urgent care, and far less than an ER visit. Actual costs depend on your insurance plan and the services performed.
When should you not go to urgent care? Do not go to urgent care for life-threatening symptoms. Chest pain, severe breathing trouble, signs of stroke, heavy bleeding, or major injuries require 911 or the ER.
What is included in a routine checkup? A routine checkup generally includes a medical history review, vitals, a physical exam, preventive screenings, vaccine review, and labs when needed. We also discuss lifestyle habits and chronic condition monitoring.
What is the difference between an annual exam and a wellness exam? The terms are often used the same way. Both center on prevention, screening, and counseling rather than treating a specific illness. Insurance plans may label them differently, so coverage can vary.
